What Is a Kissaten?
Before specialty coffee, there was the kissaten.

A Room Frozen in Time
Kissaten (喫茶店) literally means 'tea-drinking shop,' though coffee has been the main draw since the form took shape in the early 20th century. Expect siphon brewers, cigarette-stained wood, and menus that haven't changed since the Showa era.
Not the Same as Specialty Coffee
Where specialty cafés obsess over origin and process, kissaten are about atmosphere and ritual — a slow pour, a set breakfast, a regular's seat at the counter. Both are worth seeking out, for different reasons.
